Safety Helmet and Protective Headgear Impact Test Laboratory Equipment Guide

Safety helmet impact and penetration test laboratory

Safety helmets and protective headgear are designed to reduce head injury risk under impact, penetration, strap loading and environmental exposure. A complete test laboratory should include impact absorption, penetration, chin-strap strength, lateral rigidity and pretreatment equipment. Environmental pretreatment is important because material performance can change after heat, cold, water immersion or UV exposure.

Main test capabilities

  • Impact absorption testing with controlled drop height and headform;
  • Penetration resistance testing with the required striker geometry;
  • Chin strap strength, retention and roll-off evaluation;
  • Lateral rigidity or compression tests where applicable;
  • Low temperature, water immersion and UV pretreatment;
  • High-speed data acquisition, curve display and report generation.

Impact system design

The impact tester should provide accurate drop-height positioning, stable release and low-friction vertical movement. The headform, anvil, striker mass and sensor range must match the product category and test method. A protective enclosure and emergency stop are essential for operator safety.

Pretreatment and conditioning

Environmental conditioning should be controlled and documented. UV chambers, low-temperature chambers and water-immersion equipment must provide stable conditions and sufficient sample space. The transfer time between conditioning and impact testing should also be defined in the laboratory procedure.

Improving data reliability

Laboratories should periodically verify drop height, impact mass, guide alignment, sensor zero and data-acquisition settings. Reports should record sample model, size, conditioning, impact point, peak value, visible damage and any strap or shell failure.

Laboratory layout

Impact and penetration equipment should be placed in a guarded area. Data-acquisition computers should be protected from shock and debris.
