Range Hood, Fan and Ventilation Airflow Test System Planning Guide

Airflow performance is a key specification for range hoods, ventilation fans, industrial fans and air-handling components. Simple outlet velocity checks are usually not enough to describe product performance. A nozzle-chamber airflow system measures flow rate, static pressure, electrical input and efficiency under controlled operating conditions.
How the system works
A typical system uses an auxiliary fan to establish the desired pressure condition while the test sample operates. The airflow is calculated from the pressure difference across calibrated nozzles. At the same time, the system records static pressure, temperature, humidity, voltage, current, power and rotational speed when required.
Products that can be tested
- Range hoods, kitchen ventilation products and integrated cooking appliances;
- Bathroom fans, ventilation fans and fresh-air units;
- Axial fans, centrifugal fans and ducted industrial fans;
- Filter modules, air passages and air-handling assemblies;
- R&D laboratories, production quality control and third-party testing.
Sizing the test bench
The first step is to define maximum airflow, maximum static pressure, sample size, connection method and test direction. The nozzle set should cover the expected operating range without forcing the system to work at extremely low or high differential pressure. Room layout, noise, power supply and maintenance access should also be considered.
Software and reporting
Automatic software can control the pressure points, record the stabilized data and generate P-Q curves. Reports should include sample information, environmental conditions, nozzle combination, airflow, static pressure, power, efficiency and test curves. For R&D projects, raw data should be saved for comparison of impeller, motor and duct designs.
Common mistakes
Oversizing the chamber without considering the fan power and room noise is a common problem. Another mistake is neglecting sealing and connection fixtures, which can cause repeatability issues. LSKFT designs the chamber, nozzles, control system, fixtures and software as an integrated test platform.
